The Tragedy of Viserys the Peaceful
The first season of House of the Dragon has come and gone, and no character perhaps has made more of an impact on the public than Viserys Targaryen, the First of His Name. Throughout the series' run he has been called many things: weak, incompetent, exasperating, neglectful...but also strong, admirable, loving and caring. I have come across people that lay the blame for the Dance of the Dragons squarely on his feet, accusing him of being a bad king and a worse father; and I have seen others that absolve him of all guilt for the coming conflict, praising him as being as powerful and determined as the dragon he once rode. None of these takes quite capture who the character is, I think. If I had to sum up King Viserys, I'd say he was a man who, according to his personality and his abilities, did (or thought he did) the best he could.
